"The purpose of friends of the court is to make a verdict fair by collecting all evidence and facts, which must be done in an unbiased manner. If a country is believed to favour either side, it is only logical that (its request) won't be granted," Mesic said on Thursday in the eastern town of Nasice, where he opened a cement plant.
Asked if Croatia could join NATO in 2008, Mesic said that this was possible but that the country had to meet the membership criteria.
Croatia has reorganised its army, but the army must be equipped with modern weapons, Mesic said, adding that concessions should be granted for the use of some facilities of the former Yugoslav People's Army and the money earned that way invested into military equipment.
