The US is seriously interested in resolving Kosovo's status and wants to help people there to find their future in peace, tolerance and in association with Europe, the US official said, emphasising the determination of the US administration to see the issue through to a settlement.
Fried, who had met Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu and Kosovo's negotiating team earlier in the day, said that the US supported the mission of the UN chief negotiator in the Kosovo status talks, Martti Ahtisaari, praising the stance of the Kosovo delegation during the status negotiations.
Not wishing to go into details of a final settlement, the US diplomat said that the future of Kosovo should not be one of nationalism and monoethnicity but one of multiethnicity and democracy.
Fried called for an end to all forms of violence in Kosovo, saying that Kosovo's institutions and citizens were expected to support democratic values.
Later on Wednesday Fried was scheduled to meet UN Civil Administrator Joachim Ruecker, while on Thursday he travels to the northern town of Mitrovica for talks with Kosovo Serb leaders.
