"Although this is not within its remit, the parliament must not turn a blind eye to lengthy court proceedings," Ljubica Lalic of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) told the Sabor on Friday after Malcic presented a report on complaints he had received in 2005.
She stressed that she believed that a majority of judges were competent, professional and unbiased. For the sake of protecting their dignity, those who cast shadow on this profession should be excluded from the system, she added.
Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) also commented on lengthy courts processes and pointed out the problem of lengthy administrative procedures for getting construction permits and similar licences.
Nenad Stazic of the Social Democratic Party spoke about the report's sections regarding violations of workers' rights.
Drazen Bosnjakovic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said that the report submitted by the State Ombudsman focused exclusively on citizens' complaints which was why one could get the impression that state services were extremely inefficient. He urged the Central State Administration Office to compile another report on the efficiency of specific public administration offices.
The parliament will resume the debate on the State Ombudsman's report on Wednesday.
