Vjeran Pirsic, the leader of the local association told a news conference in the Croatian seaport of Rijeka that there were plans for the construction of two LNG terminals in the Bay of Trieste and one in the town of Omisalj on the island of Krk.
The Croatian government has not yet made a final decision on the location for the terminal, but it has set up a task force to deal with the matter.
The European Green Party urges Italy, Croatia and Slovenia to begin negotiations with the International Maritime Organisation on declaring the Adriatic Sea a particularly sensitive sea area.
The three countries are urged to consider the construction of one joint terminal in the middle of the Adriatic so that the plant would not obstruct transport by sea and that it would produce less harmful effects on the environment and tourism.
The European Green Party also opposes plans of Istrian County to build 22 golf courses on this largest Croatian peninsula, explaining that it would be a high concentration of the golf courses which would consequently lead to the construction of an increasing number of tourist facilities and the eventual pollution of the peninsula.
