Jakovcic was the only candidate for the post and received the support of 154 of the 183 delegates who cast their ballots.
"We promised citizens a safe and stable Istria. As long as we lead Istria, it will be so," said Jakovcic.
He vowed to encourage the regional autonomy of Istria, which he said would be established by 2010, regardless of whether Croatia joins the European Union or not.
"The time has come for the regional autonomy of Istria. This process has to begin and it has to pass without conflicts, although we are aware of the fact that there will be political quakes," said Jakovcic, voicing confidence that if a referendum on Istria's regional autonomy was held today, more than 80 per cent of the northern Adriatic county's residents would vote for it.
Damir Kajin, Giovanni Sponza, Lorella Limoncin - Toth, Nevija Poropat, and Valter Drandic were elected vice presidents, and the party also elected a new presidency.
