Berisha, a deputy president of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo (DSK) party, replaced Nexhat Daci, who tendered his resignation following instructions from the DSK, whose member he is.
Berisha pledged to do his best to see that the political will of Kosovo citizens is respected and this UN-administered province become "an independent and sovereign state, integrated with the European Union, with friendly relations with the United States".
He called on local Serbs to participate in the work of Kosovo institutions and in efforts to define Kosovo's final status.
The 59-year-old jurist Berisha has been a member of the DSK, formerly led by Ibrahim Rugova, since its establishment in 1989.
