11 pct of Croatians have some form of disability

ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - There are 510,000 people with disabilities in Croatia, making up 11 percent of the total population, according to statistics kept by the Croatian Institute of Public Health. According to the European Commission's figures, about 80 million people in the European Union have some mild or serious disability, which is one in six people, Croatia's ombudswoman for disabled persons, Anka Slonjsak, said on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on 3 December.

She called for raising public awareness of the needs of disable people, notably children.

The ombudswoman advocated organising the education of children with disabilities in such a way to enable them to attend classes together with their other peers, rather then separating them in special schools.

The convention on rights of persons with disabilities is in force in Croatia.
