Djikic becomes Novosti's editor-in-chief, Dragojevic editor-in-charge

ZAGREB, Oct 22 (Hina) - Rade Dragojevic, who so far has been the editor-in-chief of the "Novosti" weekly published by the Serb National Council (SNV), will be the paper's editor-in-charge, while Ivica Djikic, a journalist from the Novi List daily, will be Novosti editor-in chief, the presidency of the Croatian Serb umbrella organisation decided on Friday.

According to a statement, the SNV presidency today adopted a number of decisions aimed at improving "the personnel and programme capacity of the independent Serb weekly Novosti".

The decision to redistribute responsibilities in the editorial board is described in the statement as the most important decision in which the public has shown "justified interest".

"The SNV presidency informs the public that its decisions pertaining to the editorial make-up and redistribution of editors' responsibilities are in no direct connection with discussions and developments triggered off by the Novosti cover three and two weeks ago".

Being the weekly's publisher, the SNV has been mulling for some time possibilities of improving the paper's editorial policy, reads the statement signed by SNV president Milorad Pupovac.

"Any attempt to interpret the presidency's decision as a consequence of either the circumstances or the protagonists of the latest reactions to the Novosti weekly will be deemed as ignorant or ill-intentioned."

Earlier on Friday, President Ivo Josipovic said that Dragojevic's claims that he had ordered his dismissal were "extremely unfair" and untrue.

After a recent crash of two Croatian military aircraft, the weekly had a caption on its cover reading "Both are down, both of them!" The caption alludes to an exclamation by a Croatian soldier at the sight of two Yugoslav fighter jets downed over the coastal city of Sibenik during the war in 1991. The cover, which was repeated a week later, ignited strong reactions. The weekly reported having received threats.
