Josipovic attends conference on scholar Marco Antonio de Dominis on Rab

RAB, Oct 3 (Hina) - During his visit to the island of Rab on Sunday, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic attended a conference dedicated to Marco Antonio de Dominis on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the birth of that Croatian theologian and scientist.

Marco Antonio de Dominis, born on the island of Rab, was appointed Bishop of Senj in 1597 and transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Split in 1602. In 1611 he published a scientific work in which, according to Isaac Newton, he was the first to develop the theory of the rainbow. Coming into conflict with the Inquisition he was declared a relapsed heretic and was confined to a fortress in Rome. He there died a natural death, in September 1624.

Josipovic, under whose auspices the three-day conference was held in Rab, today spoke about the importance of Marco Antonio de Dominis describing him as a visionary.

He is important for Croatia as well as for the European history, Josipovic said adding that he was a leading philosopher in his time.
