Ceremony of installation of Serbian Orthodox Church primate held in Kosovo

PRISTINA, Oct 3 (Hina) - A ceremony of the installation of Patriarch Irinej of the Serb Orthodox Church was held in the monastery of Pec in western Kosovo, on Sunday with several thousand believers and Serbian President Boris Tadic attending the event.

The first part of the installation of this 80-year-old dignitary was held on 23 January in Belgrade. The second ceremony traditionally takes place in Kosovo. It has been the first ceremony of this kind in Pec, since Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008.

The dignitary's full title is His Holiness the Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, Serbian Patriarch Irinej. He succeeded Patriarch Pavle who died at the age of 95 on 15 November 2009.

During today's ceremony, Patriarch Irinej called on the international community and on Albanians in Kosovo, which he described as the southern Serbian province, to ensure peace in the area.

He warned against the elimination of traces of the Serb spirituality in Kosovo.

None of Kosovo officials came in Pec for this event as they had not been invited.
