There will be no changes to regulations on compensation to ethnic Germans and other claimants, because this is what Croatian laws and the Constitutional Court say, Sanader told reporters in Budapest after a joint session of the Hungarian and Croatian governments.
Announcing changes to the law on compensation for property confiscated under communist rule, Sanader said that changes would me made to the provision under which confiscated property is returned or compensated for on the basis of bilateral agreements.
"We will consider a lower-level legal form, probably a protocol on cooperation between justice ministries, and this is yet to be decided," Sanader said.
The PM said that he discussed the proposal with his Austrian counterpart, that President Stjepan Mesic had discussed it with the Austrian president and that the Austrian side agreed with the proposal.
"The Austrian side agrees with this and we will reach agreement on the legal form at the level of experts. It definitely will not be an international agreement, but the content of the (initialled) agreement will remain the same," Sanader reiterated.
He said that once adopted, the changes would equate foreign nationals with Croatian nationals and enable them to claim back their property within six months of the adoption of the changes.
