ZAGREB, Jan 26 (Hina) - The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) on Thursday requested Prime Minister Ivo Sanader to come to parliament and inform deputies and the public about what the Government was doing regarding the defence of Croatian generals before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, notably how will their defence be financed, so as to put an end to media speculation about the issue.

After requesting a break, Zeljko Pecek of the HSS said in parliament that lately newspapers in Croatia had been writing about who would finance the defence of generals Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markac and Ivan Cermak and in what why. He said that those newspapers mentioned unnamed Government sources who claim that the state would finance the defence of the indicted generals, while other sources said the funds would be raised by a foundation which would be set up for this purpose.

Pecek asked Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks to invite PM Sanader to Parliament to inform the public about the government's steps concerning the defence of the indicted generals so as to put an end to media speculation.

Seks told Pecek that the PM and government members were attending today a joint session of the governments of Croatia and Hungary in Budapest, adding that he would inform Sanader of his request.

Parliament is expected to resume its 18th session this afternoon with a debate on a bill on the ratification of a protocol with the convention on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
