The head of the Croatian National Protection and Rescue Directorate (DUZS), Damir Trut, said that with the establishment of this directorate in 2005, Croatia had a system capable of responding to all emergency situations.
In Croatia, civil protection units have 18,000 people at their disposal. Of them, 3,500 are members of special units, while the rest are either volunteer or professional fire-fighters, Trut said.
The DUZS has tents for 30,000 people in emergency situations, he added.
Colonel Amir Golan of the Israeli National Rescue Team spoke of the importance of informing the population about models of protection in cases of natural disasters or in wartime.
