The verdict, sentencing Martic to 35 years in prison, is appropriate, Djapic said, welcoming the clarification of the judgement which confirms the involvement of the former Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and Serbia in the war in Croatia.
Djapic also added that Croatia was still a long way from proving that it was a victim of aggression and that its defence war was not a civil war.
Martic's verdict was also welcomed by Peasant Party (HSS) leader Josip Friscic, who said that Martic was certainly among those who were the most responsible for manipulating their people, which resulted in "the crazy notion of establishing the so-called Serb Autonomous Region of Krajina" and the persecution of the non-Serb population.
"Considering the human life span, 35 years is an appropriate punishment, but it certainly does not reflect the degree of his responsibility for what happened," Friscic said.
People's Party (HNS) leader Vesna Pusic said briefly the Hague tribunal had done its job in the Martic case.
