Nikolic announces possibility of stepping down as parliament speaker

BELGRADE, May 11 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica have reached an agreement to form a new government, under which Kostunica would be the prime minister and Tadic the president of the National Security Council that coordinates all the security services, Belgrade media reported on Friday.

The present Minister of the Interior, Dragan Jocic, would remain in that post, the Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) would be shared by the Democratic Party (DS) and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), while DS would be responsible for the Ministry of Defence and the Military Security Agency.

The newly appointed Parliament Speaker, Tomislav Nikolic of the Radical Party, said on Friday he would resign from the post only if that was demanded by 126 out of the 250 members of Parliament.

"Vojislav Kostunica visited me in the Assembly this morning saying that he and Boris Tadic had reached an agreement to form a government from among the parties of the democratic bloc and that I should tender my resignation," Nikolic told Radio B92.

Nikolic made the statement following unofficial news that the leaders of the DS, DSS and G17, Boris Tadic, Vojislav Kostunica and Mladjan Dinkic, had agreed that Nikolic could not remain at the helm of the National Assembly.

Nikolic also said that he was willing to convene a parliamentary session for Saturday if Kostunica and Tadic requested so on Friday.

Under the Serbian constitution, a new government must be formed by Monday, May 14. If not, the Serbian president will have to dissolve the parliament and call a new election.
