Ministry spokesman Zeljko Belaj said the ministry received from the Croatian Embassy in London, which covers Nigeria, a report confirming that a Croatian national was kidnapped in the south of Nigeria on Tuesday morning.
Foreign news agencies reported that the six men were kidnapped when an armed group attacked a tanker stationed off Bayelsa state, in the oil-rich south of the West African country. According to agency reports, four Italians, one American and one Croatian were abducted. A Nigerian sailor was killed in the attack.
The Croatian ministry said that all six workers were employees of the US company Chevron. The ministry knows the identity of the Croatian worker and is in contact with his family, spokesman Belaj said.
The Croatian Embassy in London is in contact with Chevron, he added.
A spokesman for Chevron told the news agency Associated Press earlier that the attackers had not made any demands on the company yet.
