SDP criticises government's plans for judicial reform

ZAGREB, April 26 (Hina) - Two parliamentarians of the opposition Social Democratic Party have criticised the Government's proposal to merge magistrate's courts and municipal courts saying that this represents a feigned judicial reform under the pressure of the European Union.

"This project should be called: change the plates on court buildings and all will remain where they are," Ivo Josipovic said at a press conference in the parliament headquarters on Thursday.

Josipovic and Josip Leko accused the Ivo Sanader Cabinet of failing to do anything regarding the judicial reform during its term in office.

"Draft acts are semi-fabrications which discredit Croatia and its government before the European Union and fail to provide citizens with an efficient judiciary," Leko said.

The two SDP officials said that the government-sponsored draft acts did not tackle the issue of reorganisation of the Zagreb Municipal Court and considerable problems at a Split court.

They hold that the reform of the judiciary should be based on the training of judges and computerisation.
