Parliament adopts new Food Act

ZAGREB, April 20 (Hina) - Parliament on Friday adopted a new Food Act whereby Croatian legislation will implement European standards in the control of food and the health of animals.
ZAGREB, April 20 (Hina) - Parliament on Friday adopted a new Food Act whereby Croatian legislation will implement European standards in the control of food and the health of animals.

The Sabor tried to vote on the Food Act three weeks ago, but deputies voted only on the government's amendments and not on the act itself after the opposition walked out.

The amendments, which are part of the new law, give the Health Ministry the same influence in the Croatian Food Agency's administrative and advisory councils as the Agriculture Ministry.

The health minister will co-decide on the registration of food control laboratories and participate in setting minimum hygienic requirements for market entities dealing in food.

The new act introduces a new approach to food control, according to the "from the field to the table" principle, and an equal approach to the control of food for humans and food for animals.

The new act stipulates that market entities dealing in food have the greatest responsibility for food safety, and provides for a better coordination between inspections.

The Croatian Food Agency will estimate risks and inform the public of its findings.

The new act also regulates issues pertaining to the import and production of GMO products as well as a legal framework for the protection of traditional food products in accordance with the existing European Union regulations.
