Glavas asks parliamentary committee's consent regarding order on his detention

OSIJEK, April 17 (Hina) - War crimes indictee Branimir Glavas left his flat in Osijek around 10.30 am on Tuesday dressed in a Croatian Army uniform telling the press he had requested judge Darko Kruslin to obtain the consent of the parliamentary Credentials and Privileges Committee in connection with an order that he be placed in custody.

Accompanied by party colleagues and friends, the independent member of parliament said that his attorney Drazen Matijevic, upon collecting the detention order, requested the competent judge to obtain the consent.

"This is the second stage of the procedure and the consent of that Committee has to be obtained for every stage of the criminal procedure," said Glavas, adding that the Committee's previous consent had been consumed during the investigation into the so-called Sellotape war crimes case.

Glavas reiterated that the accusations against him were politically motivated and directed not only at humiliating him as a Croatian Army general and a person engaged in politics, but also at humiliating the Homeland War. He underlined that he was proud of the creation of Croatia and the heroic defence of the eastern city of Osijek.

The Osijek County Court decided yesterday to set detention for Glavas and extend it for six other suspects in the Sellotape case, the murder of civilians on the banks of Drava River in 1991.

In a press release distributed to reporters, Glavas accused Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic of deliberately lying when he was accusing Glavas of ordering the formation of a special unit that had been under his control.

Glavas also distributed the copy of a 1 December 1991 order on the establishment of the Osijek Operations Zone 1st sabotage company which was signed by the zone's then commander, Brigadier Karl Gorinsek.

After speaking to the press, Glavas and his party colleagues and friends went to an Osijek cafe.
