ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Retired Croatian General Mirko Norac,
sentenced to 12 years in prison for war crimes against civilians in Gospic in
1991, was transferred from the high-security penitentiary in Glina to the
medium-security penitentiary at Lipovica-Popovaca, the department of correction
within the Croatian Justice Ministry reported on Friday. Under the
law regulating the serving of prison sentences, after convicts serve a half of
their prison term, possibilities for their transfer to medium-security
penitentiaries are automatically considered.
At the Lipovica semi-open institution, Norac will be able to have more
frequent visits from his family.
Norac, who was convicted in Rijeka for the Gospic war crimes, is
awaiting another war crimes trial.
Norac and General Rahim Ademi were indicted by the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes against
civilians and POWs during the Medak Pocket Operation in 1993.
The Hague-based tribunal referred the case to the Zagreb County
Court.
