VUKOVAR, March 28 (Hina) - Five former Croatian Army soldiers went on trial before the Vukovar County Court on Wednesday on charges of murder of a four-member family in the village of Cerna near Vinkovci in February 1992.

Last summer, the police reported that they solved the murder of Radomir Olujic, his wife Anica Olujic, and his two underage children, naming Tomislav Madi, Mario Juric, Zoran Postic, Davor Lazic and Mijo Starcevic as suspects.

The five men were arrested and have been in detention since.

Juric, Postic and Lazic are believed to have shot dead the family with machine-guns in the night between 17 and 18 February 1992 following an order from their commander, Tomislav Madi. After the murder, they stole the Olujics' jewellery, weapons owned by Radomir Olujic and valuables, and planted explosive around the house with the intent of blowing it up. However, their attemept to blow up the house failed.

The accused Mijo Starcevic drove the perpetrators and showed them the house of the Olujic family.

All five indictees pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutor Vlatko Miljkovic said they were charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes against civilians.
