He was attending a summit of the European People's Party (EPP), held ahead of an EU summit later today. On Sunday, EU leaders will adopt a birthday declaration which will mention the achievements in European integration so far and future goals.
Although accession candidates were not invited to the EU summit, Sanader will attend a reception and a concert at the Berlin Philharmonic which German Chancellor Angela Merkel gives for the summit's participants. Sanader said he and the Croatian government appreciated that the German EU presidency had made this exception in Croatia's case.
Sanader said the fact that EU president Germany prepared the declaration in top secrecy indicated that this work method could be used also in deciding on important issues such as the constitutional or institutional reform.
The EPP leaders as well will adopt a declaration on the EU's 50th anniversary. Sanader said both declarations were positive.
"The Berlin declaration is very good and although short, it mentions everything that is important for European integration. One should be proud of the fact that today we Europeans are in the position to decide about our future and our present through cooperation and not through conflicts," said Sanader.
The EPP declaration says that democratic Christian parties deserve the most credit for the European unification process. "I agree with this assessment, but we also respect the other parties which support the European idea," said Sanader.
