WASHINGTON, March 23 (Hina) - The former Yugoslav defence minister, General Veljko Kadijevic, who is wanted by Croatia on war crimes charges, is not on the list of legal immigrants in the United States, the US State Department confirmed on Thursday.

The State Department has no knowledge of anyone legally entering the United States under that name, the State Department press office said in a brief statement sent to Hina in Washington.

The Croatian police said on Wednesday that the arrest warrant with a photograph of 82-year-old Kadijevic would soon be posted on Interpol's website.

An arrest warrant was requested this month by the Vukovar County Court, which had convicted Kadijevic in absentia in 2002 of war crimes committed in Vukovar during the 1991-1995 war.

Vukovar County Court investigating judge Nikola Besenski said he had requested a warrant for Kadijevic's arrest following media reports that he was staying in the US.

The arrest warrant is binding on all 186 members of Interpol, including the United States.

The first indictment against Kadijevic was issued in November 1992 in Bjelovar, the second in 2002 in Vukovar and the third in May 2006 in Osijek.
