Zagorec's lawyers postpone news conference for Wednesday

VIENNA, March 19 (Hina) - Austrian lawyers for the retired Croatian Army General Vladimir Zagorec have postponed for Wednesday a news conference which was to have been held on Monday in Vienna.
VIENNA, March 19 (Hina) - Austrian lawyers for the retired Croatian Army General Vladimir Zagorec have postponed for Wednesday a news conference which was to have been held on Monday in Vienna.

On Friday, when their client was released on bail from a Vienna prison, the lawyers told the press that they would arrange a news conference on Monday in the Austrian capital.

Today, Georg Brockmeyer, a spokesman for the law firm Lansky Ganzger, said the reason for the postponement of the news conference was the fact that the lawyers had not yet received the requested documents from Zagreb.

He added that they would need some time "to inform the media appropriately".

Asked by reporters whether Zagorec could be expected at Wednesday's news conference, the spokesman answered that he could say nothing about it at the moment.

"We will consider that with him in the coming days," Brockmeyer said, adding that their client wanted to defend his dignity which the spokesman said had been tarnished by his arrest. The spokesman, however, believes that Zagorec will soon be available to reporters.

"We are negotiating with investigating judge Claudia Forsner who is in charge of the case. We expect Croatia to give comprehensive documentation necessary for the preparation of the defence, but so far we have only received a part sent by his Zagreb lawyer and we are now working on that. However, all of this needs some time," Brockmeyer said.

On 13 March, Zagorec was arrested in Vienna on an international warrant issued by the Croatian judiciary.

Zagorec is believed to have abused office while he was a high-ranking official in the defence ministry in the 1990s and to have embezzled five million U.S. dollars.

Croatia is going to ask Austria to extradite Zagorec, who has in the meantime become a businessman in that country.
