PM says cooperation with Croatia normal, but unilateral moves to prove legally void

LJUBLJANA, Feb 13 (Hina) - Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa said on Tuesday that Croatia's unilateral moves on the border would prove to be legally void, but added that economic and other cooperation was normal and that the two countries had more things in common than those dividing them.

Speaking to the press, he commented, among other things, on relations with Croatia, which are often described as "tense" in Slovenia, notably after Slovene media said that the Croatian municipality of Buje was "selling Slovene land", which prompted Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel to announce an official protest.

Jansa said unilateral moves on Croatia's part would in the final agreement between the two states prove to be legally void, regardless of whether the agreement was arrived at bilaterally or through international arbitration.

He said unilateral moves were those which changed the state on the border as on 25 June 1991, when Slovenia and Croatia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia, adding that only a final border agreement between the two neighbours could change that state of affairs.

He ascribed current "tensions" in Croatia-Slovenia relations to the fact that this is election year in Croatia, adding that in Croatia "relations with Slovenia have always been an election topic" and that Slovenia's parliamentary elections were due next year.

Jansa confirmed that last week he met Slovene President Janez Drnovsek for talks on Croatian-Slovene dialogue.
