Mohorovicic (1857-1936) is one of the greatest Croatian scientists of all times and international geophysicists consider him one of the great seismologists of the 20th century, Professor Marijan Herak of the Geophysics Department said on Monday.
Mohorovicic, who was also a meteorologist, was one of the first to realise the importance of considering an earthquake's effects during construction.
The boundary surface or sharp seismic-velocity discontinuity that separates the Earth's crust from the underlying mantle was named after him as he was the first seismologist who suggested its existence.
