According to unofficial information, Cvitanovic was arrested in a building in central Split around 1500 hours Wednesday. He reportedly offered no resistance.
Cvitanovic was arrested in Korcula in July 2006, but managed to escape from the police as they were taking him to the police station and has been out of reach since.
According to charges filed by the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), Cvitanovic allegedly led a 20-strong drugs ring on the island. After his escape, some members of the ring continued selling drugs.
Prosecutors say that during a period of three years, until mid-November 2006, the group illegally earned over 10 million kuna (approximately EUR 1.35 million) by selling heroin.
The case came under the spotlight after a Party of Rights (HSP) member of Parliament, Ruza Tomasic, drew attention to the drug abuse problem in Korcula.
