Trade union, workers urge Sanader to help find solution to Suncani Hvar problems

ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - The Croatian trade union of workers in the tourism and services sector (STUH) and the workers' council in the Suncani Hvar hotel company on Wednesday sent a letter to Prime Minister Ivo Sanader urging him to help in efforts to solve the problems of this ailing company and preserve the jobs of its 376 permanent employees, as well as of its seasonal workers.

The workers' representatives said in the letter that they were extremely concerned and dissatisfied with the imbroglio surrounding their company.

The workers said they felt ignored, while comments and media reports on the company were only raising the question of the company's shares and assets.

They also hold that the latest media reports are causing irreparable damage to the company, and that the consequences of the situation are being felt by the workers and residents of the town of Hvar.

The trade union's branch in Suncani Hvar and the workers' council say that they welcomed a proposal for the settlement of the company's problems given by Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec during his recent visit to Hvar.

They say that Polancec's proposal provides an opportunity to regulate property-rights relations in the company and grant 292,439 company shares to its workers free of charge.

Polancec recently said that Orco Group had invested EUR 56 million in Suncani Hvar and that a part of its investments had been financed with loans which should have been repaid after the second recapitalisation stage.

However, that stage did not happen due to the bad situation on the capital market and now it is unrealistic, considering the breakdown of the stock market, Polancec said.

Therefore, the government suggested that Suncani Hvar establish a daughter company, to be purchased by the Croatian Privatisation Fund with Suncani Hvar shares in its possession, and then transferred to the ownership of the town of Hvar.

The town council in Hvar okayed the proposal but the town mayor halted the implementation of the decision, calling for a referendum on the matter.

Against a backdrop of those developments, workers urged PM Sanader to facilitate a solution to the company's problems.
