ZAGREB, June 4 (Hina) - On the occasion of 5 June, World Environment Day, which is being commemorated this year under the theme "Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change", the Croatian Ministry of Environment on Thursday issued a statement underlining that Croatia is one of 16 countries which are meeting their obligations stemming from the Kyoto Protocol.

The statement recalls the Kyoto Protocol is an international environmental treaty with legally binding commitments for the reduction of four greenhouse gases in industrialised countries.

"Croatia together with companies and various funds will have to earmark in the coming 10 to 15 years some 10 billion euros for the purpose of environment protection, and the country has so far made the biggest headway in the waste storage and management," reads the statement.

The ministry recalls that in 2007, Croatia adopted a law binding some 200 factories and energy plants to forward to the ministry by the end of this year analyses of their plants and plans for modernising their production.

The country is also investing into waste water management and has been granted loans from the World Bank for this purpose.

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
