He said that KFOR is likely to be trimmed to a 2,500-strong mission in 2010 depending on the overall security and political situation in Kosovo.
NATO is continuing with assessing the required level of its forces for all the operations in Kosovo, he said, adding that joint assessments showed the improvement of the security situation in the country.
The admiral described the situation as stable, with a minor number of incidents.
He said that the Kosovo police were able to tackle all threats.
The admiral's visit to Pristina ensued after NATO decided last week on gradually reducing its troops in Kosovo.
Fitzgerald currently has operational responsibility for NATO missions in the Balkans, Iraq and the Mediterranean.
