MOSTAR, June 26 (Hina) - The presidency of the Croatian Democratic
Union of Bosnia-Herzegovina (HDZ BiH) on Friday called on the Office of the
international community's High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina to order
the calling of mayoral elections for Mostar as this biggest southern city has
been without a mayor for eight months, since the last local elections. The HDZ BiH asks for the election of the new mayor by secret direct ballot
after the newly-established city council failed to appoint a new head of the
city in several attempts as leading Croat and Bosniak (Muslim) parties
disagreed on candidates for that post.
The HDZ BiH proposal means changing the current legislation regulating
the appointment of the mayor by councillors.
Bosniak (Muslim) politicians in Mostar are against such changes.
The HDZ BiH said that the current make-up of the city council would not
be changed and that the polls should be held only for a new mayor.
