President visits exhibition of photos of disabled war veterans

ZAGREB, June 4 (Hina) - Visiting an exhibition of photographs of 43 Homeland Defence War veterans with the most serious disabilities in Zagreb on Friday, President Ivo Josipovic said that war veterans had earned their pensions in very difficult conditions and that they deserved respect and gratitude.

In response to reporters' questions about the pros and cons of making the war veterans register public, Josipovic said he had always been a proponent of making the register available to the public, but that he was against the uncontrolled publication of an incomplete register, as had been done.

When it comes to the revision of veterans' entitlements and status, the president said he believed that Croatia was trying to ensure all rights it could for war veterans and that veterans were aware of Croatia's limited potential.

It is crystal clear that there is no money with which one can pay for the veterans' suffering, Josipovic said, adding that the state must assist those people and be sensitive about their basic needs.

The exhibition of photographs of 43 war veterans with disabilities, taken by art photographer Damir Hoyka, was staged at the Croatian Artists Association (HDLU) in Zagreb on Wednesday. The exhibition, called "Days After", is designed to provoke thoughts about the position of war veterans with highest disability ratings.
