Conference held on research in arrival of Kajkavian Croats in Vojvodina

ZAGREB, 22 Sept (Hina) - Some settlements in southern area of Banat in the Serbian province of Vojvodina are inhabited by descendants of settlers who moved from Turopolje, south of Zagreb, in the late 18th century to Vojvodina, it was said at a recent conference.

The conference on the Kajkavian Croats in the town of Boka in Vojvodina brought together scholars from Croatia and Serbia.

Croats were arriving in Banat, including the town of Boka in larger numbers in the late 18th century due to the reorganisation of the Military Frontier,  a borderland of the Habsburg monarchy and later the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was said at the scientific conference which also concluded that this community of Croats who spoke Kajkavian dialect of the Croatian language was small and exposed to assimilation.

During the conference, organised by the Institute for Culture of Vojvodina Croats, ten papers prepared by 14 authors from Croatia and Serbia were presented.

In 2016, the association of Banat Croats was established in the town of Zrenjanin to preserve the heritage of this community, according to the "Hrvatska Riječ" newspaper that reported about the conference.
