New school year begins on Monday, more secondary school students than last year

ZAGREB, 8 Sept (Hina) - In the new school year, which begins on 9 September, about 301,660 students in Croatia will attend primary school, while about 150,000 will attend secondary school, which is about a thousand more secondary school students than last year.

According to the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, slightly over 35,700 students will start the first grade. By comparison, 35,000 students were enrolled in the first grade in 2023 and 37,000 in 2022.

About 41,400 secondary students enrolled in secondary schools, up from 40,285 last year. A total of 11,137 students enrolled in general-program secondary schools and 29,968 in vocational schools.

Last year, 62 primary schools launched an experimental whole-day school program, involving 12,373 students, and the Ministry has confirmed that the program will continue this year.

The reform of vocational education is under preparation. Education will be conducted through modular classes, and the number of general education subjects will be reduced, while the number of vocational subjects will be increased. The Ministry says that the reform will be carried out in the school year 2025/2026.
