Lonjsko Polje Day marked

ZAGREB, 14 April (Hina) - The Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, one of the largest wetland areas in the Danube River basin, declared a nature park in 1990, is managed by a public institution which is now marking Lonjsko Polje Day, with guests from Portugal who wanted to get acquainted with the nature park's good practice.

Portuguese representatives from 15 LAGs (Local Action Groups) arrived to exchange experiences on sustainable use of natural and cultural resources in the protected area of the Nature Park.

Covering an area of 50,650 hectares in the alluvial plain of the Sava River between Sisak and Stara Gradiška, Lonjsko Polje is crucial for flood defence, serving as a vast natural retention area during high water levels. This has resulted in various types of wet forests, meadows, and pastures.

The area encompasses 12,000 hectares of pastureland.

Lonjsko Polje is an important habitat for birds and birdwatching is a popular activity there.
