Croatia's Zovko, Picula make top 100 most influential MEPs ranking

ZAGREB, 26 Feb (Hina) -  Željana Zovko (EPP/HDZ) is the most influential Croatian MEP, Tonino Picula (S&D/SDP) is the most influential MEP on foreign affairs, defence and enlargement, and Tomislav Sokol (EPP/HDZ) the most influential MEP on health, according to the MEP Influence Index 2024 published on Monday.

Zovko ranks 19th among the 100 most influential MEPs. She is vice president of the European People's Party and the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.

"This is a big recognition for Croatia because it shows how much we contribute with our participation to the European Union as a whole," she said, thanking citizens, the HDZ party and the EPP Group for their support.

Picula placed 28th among the 100 most influential MEPs. He is the European Parliament rapporteur on relations with the United States and the author of an adopted report on a new enlargement strategy.

Security, foreign and enlargement policies have become the most important EU policies with the most challenges in the last five years, Picula said in a statement. "From the departure of the Trump administration, which actively worked on breaking up the relations with the EU as its main partner, via the COVID-19 pandemic, which uncovered the many faults in the EU's internal organisation as well as our solidarity as member states, to the Russian aggression on Ukraine and Israel's brutal response to Hamas' terrorist attack in the Gaza Strip."

Picula said he focused his work on those matters to contribute to Croatia's being an active participant in processes in which decisions on the future international order were made.

In last year's Top 100 most influential MEPs, Zovko placed 79th and Picula 69th.

Sokol is the EPP coordinator on the Subcommittee on Public Health and advocates for equal access to healthcare across the EU and easier access to treatment abroad.

From the beginning of his term, he said in a statement, he has been fighting for a more just and better health system at EU level in which there are no first and second class citizens, and will continue to advocate for patients.

Influence Index 2024 measures the influence that members of the European Parliament have exerted over EU policy since the beginning of the current Parliamentary term (July 2019-February 2024).
