Merrymakers in self-made cars, horses, runners in carnival events across Croatia

ZAGREB,  4 Feb (Hina) - On Saturday and Sunday, Croatian towns and villages were swarmed by merrymakers who took part in various carnival events on the penultimate weekend before Mardi Grass.

In the coastal resort of Opatija, a soapbox race of self-made vehicles that run on ball-bearings (known locally as "balinjere" – hence the name Balinjerada) instead of wheels was held in the main street, attracting thousands of spectators.

On Saturday, about 50  period-clad horsemen rode through Vinkovci, as part of the pre-Lenten festivities in east Croatia.

The carnival horsemen were welcomed by local authorities and a crowd in the centre of Vinkovci where revelers could enjoy local cuisine.

On Saturday and Sunday, the 30th traditional pre-Lenten carnival took place in the eastern Croatian city of Đakovo, with over 1,700 masked participants in 45 bands from Croatia and Hungary.

The events called "Đakovački Bušari" kicked off on Saturday, when Mayor Marin Mandrić handed over the keys to the city to the carnival's leaders. On Sunday, bands with about 50 horsemen marched through the Široko Polje residential area.

Also today, a race with participants in various costumes was held in the downtown Rijeka within the programme for carnival parades.

Other towns and regions in Croatia also organised various Shrovetide events this weekend, with the culmination of the festive season being next weekend and on Tuesday, 13 February, when Mardi Grass is celebrated this year.
