Employers and association push for grater inclusion of people with Down syndrome

ZAGREB,  1 Feb (Hina) - The Croatian Employers' Association (HUP) and the Croatian Down Syndrome Association have signed an agreement on cooperation with the aim of promoting the inclusion and employment of persons with this genetic disorder, the HUP stated on Thursday.

HUP wants to be a driver of change in society and encourage the integration of people with Down syndrome in workplace communities, the association said.

Currently, there are 11 persons with this syndrome who have employment contracts in Croatia. An additional 20-30 persons with Down syndrome, who have certain qualifications, are looking for employment, said Dinka Vuković of the Croatian Down Syndrome Association.

Over 70% of employees with Down syndrome work in the private sector, Vuković said, calling on the public sector to encourage greater employment of persons with Down syndrome.

HUP director-general Irena Weber said the HUP will work on preparing a better legislative framework to facilitate the hiring of workers with Down syndrome.
