€45m project to upgrade weather observation system completed

ZAGREB, 12 Dec (Hina) - The EU-funded €45 million project to modernise the observation system of Croatia's Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), which has just been completed, ensures meteorological measurements for the whole country, the DHMZ said on Tuesday.

The project, 85% of which was covered by the EU and the remaining 15% by the national Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency, facilitates weather measurements at over 400 locations at sea and on land throughout Croatia. Such measurements can help reduce future damage caused by natural disasters or temperature extremes.

The 400 meteorological stations, six radars and five weather buoys will enhance weather observation.

The DHMZ director, Branka Ivančan Picek, was quoted in a press release as saying that the project places Croatia among leading countries in Europe in the field of meteorology. She announced the introduction of a central integration platform with all relevant data soon.

The European Commission Director-General for Regional and Urban Policy, Sofia Alves, says that this METMONIC project is strategically important for the entire European Union. She highlighted the importance of decarbonisation of the economy.

Aleksandra Čilić from the Croatian Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund said that the project enables the permanent observation of air quality, weather, climate and the issuing of timely weather alerts and warnings.
