Centre for Seed and Seedlings marks 25 years of operation

ZAGREB, 28 Nov (Hina) - The Centre for Seed and Seedlings of the Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food (HAPIH) marked the 25 years of its continuous operation at a ceremony in the eastern city of Osijek on Tuesday.

The ceremony was told that it is one of the most developed centres of its kind in the region and among the best in the European Union.

HAPIH Director Darja Sokolić said that the global commercial seed market is estimated at US$42 billion, while the value of international seed trade is estimated at $10 billion (1.2 billion kilograms of seed).

"Croatia has excellent conditions for seed production, which is a prerequisite for achieving the good quality of seed, and domestic seed processing is not lagging behind that in the EU," Sokolić said, adding that seed production is among the most profitable activities in agriculture.

The head of the Centre for Seed and Seedlings, Goran Jukić, said that seed production is important for every country.

"Right now we are self-sufficient on all plant species where we have selection, which means that we fully meet our needs for all cereals. The same goes for soybeans, 20% of which is exported, and alfalfa, while we meet 60% of our needs for corn," Jukić said.

The Centre has 42 workers and 75 supervisors who carry out on-site checks.

Croatia has about 22,500 hectares of land for production, 50% of which is sown with cereals, 20% with industrial crops, up to 15% with corn, while the rest is other crops, Jukić said.
