The town was defended by Croats and ethnic Hungarians together. The defence against Serb forces lasted 152 days until 24 November 1991, when the remaining defenders and civilians managed to break through the encirclement. A total of 48 defenders and civilians were killed in Laslovo.
Wreaths were laid by Minister for Veterans' Affairs Tomo Medved, state, county and municipal delegations, delegations of the Hungarian Embassy, the Croatian military and police, and Homeland War associations, as well as by the families of those killed.
Robert Jankovics, who represents the Hungarian minority in the Croatian parliament, recalled the enormous sacrifice made by the Hungarian community in Laslovo for the free and independent Croatia. He said that a Museum of Croatian Defenders was being built in Laslovo with funding from the state budget and that it was expected to be opened next July.
