Art project showing Zagreb streets from new perspective

ZAGREB, 21 Aug (Hina) - The Okolo/Around art project is kicking off in Zagreb in cooperation with the city's tourist board, reviving public spaces and turning them into places where art spontaneously meets everyday life, with emphasis on local artists and their experience and vision of the city.

The artists who will leave their mark over Zagreb this year include Isaac Cordal of Spain and Ememem, a street art collective from Lyon, France.

Cordal places his miniature sculptures in the urban environment to comment on modern society, while Ememem show the art of "healing" cracked streets and building facades with their mosaics.

Among the Croatian artists, Ida Blažičko will present Waves, a sculpture made of textile, Ivana Mrčela is showing High Noon, her homage to Zagreb's pigeons, fashion designer Damir Begović is showing an installation which takes a contemporary approach to ethnic tradition, and Jelena Malenica is showing her installation Endless Summer.

The street project was started in 2018 by Ana Mikin and Tina Kovačiček, known as Nas Dve, in cooperation with the Zagreb Tourist Board. Since then, Okolo/Around has enriched many Zagreb streets, impressing both locals and tourists.

This year Nas Dve is dedicating a photo intervention to great Zagreb photographer Slavka Pavić.

"I'm happy that this August, too, new urban interventions which encourage thinking will be presented, thereby contributing to raising awareness of the value and impact of art on everyday life," Tourist Board director Martina Bienenfeld said on Monday.

An art walk through Zagreb, organised under the Okolo/Around project, may be taken until 30 August.
