Croatia committed to addressing radioactive waste challenges, independent review says

ZAGREB, 23 June (Hina) - An independent expert review by the ARTEMIS mission said that Croatia is committed to tackling the challenges of managing radioactive waste and nuclear fuel from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, but it also identified areas for improvement, the Civil Protection Directorate said on Friday.

The mission, organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was carried out at Croatia's request from 11 to 19 June, and it was hosted by the Fund financing the decommissioning and disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel from the Krško nuclear power plant.

The findings of ARTEMIS mission, which are the basis for further improving the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste in Croatia, have been consolidated in a final report, and the final report of the review will be made available to Croatia no later than two months after the end of the mission.

The review was conducted by a team of experts from Canada, France, Norway and the United Kingdom, as well as three members appointed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, while a representative of the European Commission participated as an observer.

The Civil Protection Directorate presented them with legislation on the Croatian radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management system, and they participated in discussions on the issue of administrative supervision of radioactive waste and spent fuel management, as well as on personnel and financial needs for the implementation of a national programme.
