Deputy mayor, rabbi light first candle on menorah in Zagreb's main square

ZAGREB, 20 Dec (Hina) - The 13th ceremony of lighting the first candle on a menorah in Zagreb's main square was held on Tuesday, the third day of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, and the central candle was lit by Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet and Rabbi Pinchas Zaklos.

The placement of a menorah in the main square is organised by the Jewish organisation Menora with the city's support.

Korlaet said it was an honour to light the first and most important candle on the Hanukkah menorah, thus symbolically marking light's victory over darkness. "With this event... Zagreb is showing that it is an open, tolerant, multi-confessional city."

The ceremony was attended by Israeli Ambassador Gary Koren, who said this was his first Hanukkah in Zagreb and that he was pleased the ceremony was organised in the main square.
