Best designs of Croatian national sides of euro and cent coins presented in Zagreb

ZAGREB, 4 Feb (Hina) - During Friday's meeting of Croatia's national council for the changeover from the kuna to the euro, the most successful designs of the Croatian national motifs on future coins were presented.

The €2 coin in Croatia will have a geographical map of Croatia, and the words about freedom from Ivan Gundulić's famous work Dubravka. The author of this design is Ivan Šivak.

The national side of the €1 coin will contain the motifs of the marten animal or the kuna in Croatian and the author is Stjepan Pranjković.

The coins of 50, 20 and 10 cents will have the image of scientist Nikola Tesla, and this design has been made by Ivan Domagoj Račić.

The national sides of the five, two and one cent contain the image of the Glagolitic script, and the author of this side is Maja Škripelj.

The national sides of all those coins will also include Croatia's checkerboard.

Each of the euro-area countries uses familiar or traditional motifs and icons for the design of the national sides of their coins. Some countries have a different design for each coin denomination; others apply the same design to all.

The production of euro coins with the Croatian national side should start at least six months before the introduction of the euro.

On 10 September, the European Commission and euro area Member States signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Croatia outlining the practical steps that will allow the country to begin producing euro coins when it receives the go ahead to join the euro area.
