Croatia to conduct its first digital census from 13 Sept to 17 Oct

ZAGREB, 9 Sept (Hina) - The Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) will conduct a general population census fro 13 September to 17 October, and the first stage of the census, which will last from 13 to 26 September, will be digital.

In that period, citizens will use the electronic system called "e- citizens" (e-građani), to self-enumerate and fill in the relevant questionnaire for the the members of their households.

In the second phase census takers, that is the field staff, will interview the residents of every household that has not responded online to collect census information.

The Official Statistics Act provides for the confidentiality of the data collected during the census and can be used only for statistical purposes

Recently the DZS has refuted in the strongest terms all the objections that have appeared in the media or have been presented by some Opposition politicians considering the preparations for the 2021 census.

The DZS underscores that the census on population, households and dwellings is the most comprehensive statistical survey, and the 2021 census is the first digital census, which has been prepared professionally and with expertise and in compliance with the UN recommendations and the EU regulations.

The preparations have taken several years and DZS employees have invested a lot of efforts in them.

The office underscores that it is an autonomous and professional institution that performs its activities in line with European statistical standards in compliance with the Law on Official Statistics.

Relevant language skills and cultural familiarity of enumerators

Considering the counties populated by ethnic minorities, members of those ethnic groups are included in the data collection both as census takers and controllers in proportion to their share of the local population, the DZS says recalling that this was also the practice for the 2001 and 2011 censuses, which proved to be good practice, as linguistic barriers could be thus easily overcome.
