Kosovo bus driver stands mute

ZAGREB, 26 July (Hina) - The driver of a Kosovo-registered bus that ran off the road and overturned on the A3 motorway at Slavonski Brod on Sunday morning, killing 10 passengers, stood mute when questioned by the Slavonski Brod-Posavina County Prosecutor on Monday.

"I questioned the suspect, who stood mute. Now a decision will be made for an investigation to be launched due to suspicion that he committed a criminal offence and investigative custody will be recommended, and the motion will be decided on by the County Court in Slavonski Brod at 9 am on Tuesday," Deputy County Prosecutor Franjo Kopunić said.

He confirmed that the driver was given a court-appointed lawyer.

Based on the criminal report, the driver could be sentenced to between six months and fifteen years' imprisonment.

The Kosovo-registered bus with 67 passengers and two drivers on board, travelling en route from Frankfurt, Germany to Kosovo, swerved off the motorway at Slavonski Brod, eastern Croatia, at 6.20 am on Sunday, as a result of which nine passengers and the driver who was resting were killed. Forty-four passengers were injured, including 15 seriously.

After they were given treatment in the Slavonski Brod hospital, 26 passengers were discharged on Monday.

Some passengers have headed home while others are returning to Germany at their own expense. Kosovo's interior and health ministries have arranged transport for some of the passengers.

The families of the passengers who are still in hospital have been provided with accommodation by Slavonski Brod-Posavina County authorities.

Police spokesman Damir Brezić earlier in the day confirmed that eight casualties had been identified so far.
