Memorial walk for Israeli hero Hannah Szenes takes place in Čakovec

ZAGREB, 21 July (Hina) - Members of the Israel Defence Forces on Wednesday took part, together with the Croatian Armed Forces, in a memorial walk through Čakovec in honour of Israeli heroine and poet Hannah Szenes, and a memorial to her was unveiled in the city's Zrinski Park.

The memorial walk is taking place from 19 to 22 July in Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.

A total of 150 members of the Israel Defence Forces, Slovenian Armed Forces and members of the Croatian Military Police and Defence Ministry, as well as members of an association of Homeland War volunteers and veterans took part in the "Operation Lightning of the Heavens" memorial walk.

The procession was led by Israeli Ambassador to Croatia Ilan Mor, State Secretary at the Croatian Ministry of Defence, Zdravko Jakop, and Commander of the Military Colleges of Israel Defence Forces, Major General Itai Veruv.

A memorial was unveiled in Zrinski Park in Čakovec in honour of the Israeli poet and national hero Hannah Szenes on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth.

Szenes was a young women who, in the midst of World War II, resisted the Nazi plan to destroy her people and rescued her countrymen. She was captured in one such action near Podbrest and then killed in Budapest at the age of 23, it was said.

Hannah Szenes's resistance and perseverance in the fight against the Nazi regime are a true example of love and loyalty to one's people, from which we can learn a lot, said State Secretary Jakop.

"This activity has brought our armies closer and deepened the friendly relations between our two states, creating fertile ground for the development of future cooperation," Jakop said.

Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec said a monument to a brave and self-sacrificing woman was being unveiled, adding the intention is to pay deep respect to every individual innocent victim.

Mayor Ljerka Cividini said monuments like these help to preserve the memory of those who are no longer here.
