HBK president visits Sisak Diocese

ZAGREB, 27 February (Hina) - The president of the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK), Zadar Archbishop Želimir Puljić, on Saturday visited the Sisak Diocese and the local distribution centre of the Caritas Roman Catholic charity.

Puljić met with Sisak Bishop Vlado Košić and the two dignitaries discussed the situation in the diocese, located in Sisak-Moslavina County, hit by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on 29 December.

Numerous churches and parish offices in the diocese were damaged in the earthquake.

According to the situation on 18 January 2021, 17 churches were destroyed or severely damaged in the earthquake, 15 were considerably damaged, and seven were partly damaged. Seven parish offices and monasteries were destroyed or severely damaged and six were considerably damaged. Twenty-four chapels were destroyed or damaged as well.

Of the 63 parish churches, 31 have been found unfit for use.

More than 1,000 volunteers have passed through the Caritas distribution centre in Sisak in the two months since its establishment and on Saturday about 100 volunteers were sorting humanitarian relief items there, including former president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.
