Croatian and Slovenian producers move to brand Istrian sheep's cheese in EU

ZAGREB, 28 February (Hina) - Croatian and Slovenian producers of Istrian sheep's cheese have launched a joint initiative to brand their product in the European Union, the Slovenian government announced earlier this week.

The Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food has received an application for protection of Istrian sheep's cheese with an EU protected designation of origin, jointly prepared by Slovenian and Croatian producers of this cheese.

Istrian sheep's cheese can be produced only in the Slovenian and Croatian parts of the Istria peninsula and the Croatian Kvarner islands. Only raw or pasteurised milk from sheep raised in this geographical area can be used for its production, the ministry said.

Istrian sheep's cheese is not the only product for which Slovenian and Croatian producers applied for an EU protected designation of origin. They have been granted a protected designation of origin for Istrian prosciutto and olive oil, and have announced a similar initiative for Istrian honey.
